Transforming internal communications
In 2019, I had a seminar on gamification during my M.A. studies. One of my tasks is to create a gamified solution to optimize bureaucratic processes throughout Berlin's administrative apparatus.
"The basic idea is that all Berlin administration employees should help develop solutions for everyday problems, bureaucratic problems, inconsistencies in the workflow, or similar grievances. Ultimately, employees have to deal with many small problems every day that make them inefficient and unnecessarily drain their energy. Often the management is not very empathetic to such problems. The goal is to change that and achieve a participation rate of 80% in the long run."
To find a solution, we had to first understand the problems employees are facing. Therefore, we have conducted comprehensive research and several rounds of interviews to empathize with the users.
Gamification
The solution was to create an app/website that serves as an integrated internal communication platform for Berlin public servants that is both accessible and transparent.
The platform is integrated with game mechanics that are easily comprehensible for the user. Experience points are earned by interacting with themes, news and surveys, which are linked to weekly missions, achievements, teams and leaderboard.
